Researchers from the Rochester Institute of Technology are looking at ways to intercept vulnerabilities in computer systems before hacker do. University representatives say that want to teach students how to better protect online data.

RIT announces two new grant funded cyber security research projects totaling 840 thousand dollars.

The projects intend to get ahead of computer hackers.

Jay Yang is the head of the computer engineering department at RIT. He says the first step is to use algorithms that help discover the pathways where hackers can get in computer systems.

"By using these algorithms, we can help the security analysts get a better understanding, Where are the critical paths into a network? What are the potential strategies that might come into my critical data? And by doing so, the analysts are being assisted to get an advantage on defending earlier," says Yang.

Yang says RIT is focused on preparing a workforce prepared to keep data secure, "We are very much on the frontline trying to training the workforce, educating students, and conducting advanced research on how to combat this issue."

University representatives say these projects are one approach to creating an army of students to combat cyberattacks.
