Rochester RazorSharks get ready for a new season at a new venue

The Rochester RazorSharks basketball team is back, and playing at a new location. The team had won several championships starting in 2006, but they were on hiatus last year.

But the minor league professional basketball team is back now with new operators, Jen and Keith Moore. The couple also owns Mooreland Productions, an entertainment company.

Keith Moore says they are a part of the Premier Basketball League, which currently has 6 teams in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

And instead of the prior local home base for the team at the Blue Cross Arena, they’ll be playing at the Genesee Valley Sports Complex on Elmwood Avenue. It’s a smaller venue, but Moore says it’s the right size for where the team stands now. And he says the RazorSharks and the rest of the league are focused not only on competition, but on being an important part of the community.

“And we really focus on having physical fitness and just getting kids moving and making sure that they’re paying attention to what they can get done not just specific to basketball but a number of different sports,” Moore says.

Rochester’s Commissioner for Recreation and Youth Services Daniele Lyman-Torres also likes the fact the RazorSharks will be working with local youth and at the same time, she says the city will get more use out of the Genesee Valley Sports complex, a venue currently known mainly for its rink and pool.

“We serve so many youth across the city, and being able to connect them to the RazorSharks and having them  being able to watch the RazorSharks on a regular basis is really going to enhance everyone’s experience,” Lyman-Torres says.

The RazorSharks will host 11 regular season games starting on December 31. There’s more information at www.razorsharks.com
