Snowmobilers will be hitting trails around Monroe County soon

Trails for snowmobilers around Monroe County will open soon, and after three fatalities in December in the North Country, officials are stressing safety for riders.

State Park Police Sgt. Philip Nesbitt says it's important snowmobilers know exactly where they are going when they head out, and let others know of your plans because sometimes cell phones fail in the extreme cold.

``Unfortunately with the cold, it's hard to rely on cell phones.  Sometimes you don't have cell phone coverage due to the cold conditions, and they're not operable.  So that's why you want to make sure somebody knows where you're going in case something does happen," he said.

Nesbitt says it’s also important to know which trails are open.

``Keep in mind, you'll want to check those trail conditions with the county clubs because some areas might be open and some areas might not, so if you're planning on a final destination, you want to make sure you get their safely with open trails," he said.

There are several snowmobile clubs serving Monroe County and the surrounding area.

Nesbit adds riders should always wear a helmet, and dress for the occasion because wind chill is a factor while riding.

Other tips include using extreme caution while riding over frozen bodies of water, and never drink alcohol or use drugs and ride.

New York State has over 10-thousand miles of state-designated snowmobile trails.
