The Nutcracker: Rochester's Thanksgiving Tradition

rochestercityballet.com

The holidays carry a number of traditions, and in Rochester one is the Nutcracker ballet.

"When I heard that the Nutcracker was performed with live music and a world-class orchestra like the Rochester Philharmonic, I just knew it would be a perfect match," said Rochester Community Ballet Executive Director Nichole Gantshar.

She knows the Rochester Nutcracker is a unique Thanksgiving tradition here.

"It's earlier here, just traditionally. This is when it's done in Rochester. A lot of places do it over Christmas time, but we've always wanted to do it with the RPO this weekend, because it's a great family time."

What makes it special? Gantshar points to the live music.

"It inspires the dancers. It helps engage the audience more. It creates a wonderful opportunity, so it means a lot for this company to be able to perform with the RPO."

Inspiration is what the theatre is about, according to Gantshar.

"Your soul is with it the second you walk in. The theatre's a magical place and so to be able to perform at the Eastman Theatre, which is historic and gorgeous...you know you're going to see something special before the performance even begins."

Gantshar says the Nutcracker at the Eastman Theatre is like a football "home game" for the performers. Most of the dancers are from Rochester, were trained here, and many likely performed as children in the Nutcracker Ballet.

"Now they get to be on stage performing as paid, professional dancers and so there's even more excitement from them, because it's their home turf. It's the same thing as a home game for football. There's always a little more excitement in the audience."

If you go: Gantshar suggests you just enjoy the music and movements – and have a good time. Your tux is okay, and so are your jeans. Everyone is welcome, she says.

Performances of the 16th annual Nutcracker Ballet with the RPO and RCB are at 2 and 7 Saturday and Sunday at 2 at Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre.

"Create a family memory and come to the Nutcracker. Perhaps you haven't been in a while. Connect with everybody and get out of the every day, and remind yourself what's really special about the holiday season."
