Monroe County will soon have a full time health commissioner. County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo has named Dr. Michael Mendoza to that post. He has been interim health commissioner since April.

Dinolfo said that Mendoza has demonstrated his extensive experience and has become an invaluable member of the administration.

Most recently, Mendoza has been Medical Director at Highland Family Medicine; previously he served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago.

Mendoza replaced another interim commissioner who had been in the Monroe County post, and the NYS Health Department has reportedly talked to county officials to remind them about the importance of hiring a permanent, full-time commissioner of health.

At the July Meeting of the Monroe County Legislature, Dinolfo will introduce a local law amending the county charter authorizing the commissioner of public health to maintain clinical hours in order to remain currentwith professional certifications.

After final approval by the county legislature, Mendoza would become full time commissioner as of January 1, 2017.
