Recent data from the New York State Labor Department shows modest job growth for the Rochester area.

This region saw an increase of 900 private sector jobs in January, compared to a year ago.

That’s less than the increases that have been reported in recent months, (January of 2018 saw an increase of 2,800 jobs), but state labor analyst Tammy Marino says it was still a solid report. She says due to seasonal factors, growth in January is usually not as robust.

Overall, Marino says the job gains were in areas that are usually strong points for the local economy.

“Recent job gains were fairly concentrated in health care and education, however, employment in a number of key sectors also increased. Construction employment has been expanding very consistently throughout the past 8 years and as a result, employment in that sector currently stands at its highest January on record,” Marino said.

The state’s unemployment rate in January was at 4.1 percent, its lowest annual rate on record. The Rochester area unemployment rate will be released on Tuesday.
