Town of Greece Police Chief Drew Forsythe has been placed on administrative leave after being involved in a crash with his town-issued vehicle early Thursday morning on Route 390. He was not seriously injured.
Details about the crash became public on Saturday.
Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said that he was informed Thursday morning by Forsythe about the crash.
He said the Greece Police Department had made a report about the incident and that he was made aware on Saturday of additional details. At that time, he said he concluded that the Monroe County District Attorney's Office should be brought in as an independent investigator.
Forsythe had told police officials that he hit a guardrail while trying to avoid a deer around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office released a statement Saturday saying that it would be investigating the incident at the request of the Greece Police Department.
Reilich said Forsythe has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation concludes, and that Deputy Chief Jason Helfer is now acting chief.
Forsythe will continue to be paid while he's on leave. Reilich said that's in accordance with a town policy that's been in place since 2013.
