Connections: The Hidden Cost of Mental Illness

Forty-five percent of all hospital admissions in the Finger Lakes region are related to mental health conditions. Suicide is the fifth-leading cause of early death in our region. But mental illness remains a challenge in part because it's not always viewed as a medical condition. • Kathy Plum, former mental health commissioner for Monroe County
  • Kay Spellane, senior data and research analyst for Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency
  • Dr. Thomas Mahoney, FLHSA chief medical officer and primary care physician
