RPD says 15-year-old car theft suspect suffers minor wound in officer-involved shooting

Spectrum News

Rochester Police say that one of their officers fired his gun at  a 15 year old boy after they say the teen was driving a stolen car that nearly struck that officer who was on foot.

It happened late Thursday afternoon when officers say they spotted a stolen car in the area of Essex Street, and tried to pull it over.

They say the driver failed to pull over, and following department policy, the officers did not chase after it. But soon after that, the vehicle was seen in a parking lot at West Broad and Jay Street.

Authorities say several officers approached on foot, and the stolen  car  backed up and then drove forward, speeding toward one of the officers.

Officials say the officer who was almost hit by the car fired five rounds from his gun. All of the bullets went into the stolen car. Police say in an attempt to escape, the stolen vehicle hit another car that was parked at the intersection.

The driver, a 15 year old boy, suffered a minor leg injury due to one of the bullets and was treated at the hospital and released into police custody. No one else was injured.

The teen, whose name was not released due to his age, was charged in Family Court with grand larceny and reckless endangerment.
