A joint effort between the towns of Pittsford, Brighton, Irondequoit as well as the Village of Pittsford are partnering in a community choice aggregation program.
This would allow municipalities to go out an procure energy source on behalf of constituents and is the next big step to providing 100 % green, renewable energy for residents .
That’s according to Irondequoit Town Supervisor Dave Seeley.
“I think it’s a terrific opportunity for our communities and one that allows local governments and communities to lead the fight on climate change absent a national strategy that really has been lacking."
He also says the town of Irondequoit has been embracing green energy with various initiatives and putting solar panels on the police station, but says it’s harder for individual homeowners.
"This takes a lot of the burden off of the residents and really makes it the default option that they could have 100% clean energy."
Seeley says residents would still get their energy from RG&E.
But this commitment is just the first step in a number of hurdles. Seeley says next each municipality must select a licensed administrator to procure the renewable energy based on their criteria.
Seeley says that search will begin early in the New Year, and hopes this plan will come to fruition in 2019.
