Thursday marks three years since the ambush that killed two West Webster firefighters who responded to a fire on Lake Road. Firefighters & family gathered this morning behind the fire hall at a monument dedicated to the men who died.

On Christmas Eve 2012, authorities said William Spengler set a fire as a trap to lure firefighters to his home, and then shot at them, killing Lieutenant Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz  Kaczowka.

Two other firefighters and a police officer were injured in the ambush. Spengler also killed his sister.

Chiapperini’s mother, Marsha, talked to  Time Warner Cable News about just how horrific that day was.

“It was a shock, it was terrible, I can’t think of anything worse, really, because I lost my husband 20 years ago, but this was a different kind of death, it was very, very hard.”

A number of people came out to West Webster this morning to put out flags and flowers at the memorial for the firefighters.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
