There's a warning for consumers going out in the Rochester area about those so-called " skimming " devices used to steal credit card information.
Skimmers are small devices that a thief can set up on machines used to take credit or debit card payments, which can scan and store the user's credit card information, for later use to steal money or charge purchases.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says that their deputies and Rochester Police have been investigating incidents at several area gas stations where the devices may have been used to steal credit card data.
These are the dates and locations deputies have released:
9/08/15 - 1835 Mt. Hope Avenue. Rochester
9/11/15 - 69 Rochester Street, Scottsville
10/06/15 - 3892 Scottsville Road, Scottsville
10/13/15 - 110 S. Main Street, Fairport
Authorities say these skimmers are responsible for a great deal of credit card fraud throughout Monroe County. Among the things officials recommend you do to protect yourself, if you pay for gas at the pumps, pick a pump that is closest to the gas station attendant or building; pay with cash or use your credit card inside the building, and if you see any suspicious activity around the gas pumps, call 911 or tell the attendant.
