Labor Day Parade Accompanied By Call For Better Wages

A big crowd is expected for Monday’s annual Labor Day parade in Rochester. It is  one of the largest Labor Day parades in the state.

It starts at 11:00 a.m., and due to construction on the Inner Loop, it follows the alternate route that parades in the city have been using this year.

The parade steps off on East Avenue near Scio Street, instead of at Alexander. Then it heads over to Main Street, finally ending up on Plymouth Avenue. The parade route will be closed to traffic from approximately 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Officials with local labor organizations traditionally use the event to highlight issues facing workers, and the new President of the Rochester Labor Council, Bruce Popper, issued a statement saying that America has become a ‘low wage’ country. He says with half of all full-time jobs generating an income of less than $35,000, working families are struggling more than ever. Popper says unions need to help workers organize to combat poverty.
