The NTSB has released a preliminary report in connection with the crash of a small plane that killed four Rochester area people in the Adirondacks last Friday.

Raymond Shortino and his wife Sharon were aboard the plane with Harvey and Sharon Stoler when the Piper aircraft crashed , just minutes after taking off from Adirondack Regional Airport. They were there to watch their adult sons play in a lacrosse tournament.

The report says that the airplane had flown uneventfully from Rochester to Saranac Lake  earlier that day.  During the return flight, an airport employee heard the pilot announce the plane was departing and there were no further communications and no eyewitnesses to the accident.

The plane came ot rest upright against several trees, and officials say the cockpit was consumed by fire and no readable flight instruments were recovered.

The propeller separated from the engine and was located in a crater about 20 feet along the path of the debris.  There's no information yet on the cause of the crash.
