Black Ice Causes Multiple Accidents Around Rochester

The extreme cold temperatures have caused some treacherous conditions for Rochester area drivers.

There were a number of accidents on the expressways because of black ice, according to Trooper Mark O'Donnell of the State Police.

"The roads appear to look clear, but they're ice-covered. I think people don't realize that there is black ice and the salt the DOT is putting down is not as effective as it would be if the temperatures were higher."

Earlier this morning, portions of some expressways were closed due to multiple accidents.

"I've seen accidents everywhere from 490 in Gates to 490 in the city to 590 in Brighton,” O’Donnell said. “Obviously, 104 and the Bay Bridge; we had real issues out there this morning."

O'Donnell said there were no serious injuries reported. He is advising drivers to reduce their speeds and not assume that the road is clear even if it appears to be.

"It's imperative that before you do hit any ice-covered or snow-covered roadways that you realize that it may be slippery and reduce your speeds. Steer out of it, try to brake and steer. It's imperative that people realize that the roads are not clear and dry. It’s not summertime in Rochester."
