Man Charged With Pittsford Murder

Monroe County Deputies have charged a Pittsford man with killing his father Monday evening. Shortly after 6:00 p.m. deputies were called to 37 Coach Side Lane in Pittsford about a domestic incident.

As they were responding, there was information that someone had been shot. When deputies got to the house they found 19 year old Charles Tan and 46 year old Qing Tan standing in the driveway.  Deputies found 49 year old Ling Tan, dead in the house. Ling Tan is the father and husband of Charles and Qing Tan.

During the investigation early Tuesday morning deputies found a shotgun in the garage of the house.  Charles Tan was arraigned on a charge of second degree murder and ordered held with no bail.

Deputies say they have  been called to the Pittsford home several times in the past for possible domestic incidents.

Charles Tan is a graduate of Pittsford Mendon High School and had been attending Cornell University.

The Pittsford School District sent this email out to parents:
"Today, our schools are providing students with a sense of normalcy while being alert for students showing signs of distress," said the statement emailed to families. "Again, please know that your child(ren) are in good hands at school. Don't hesitate to call if you need additional support. Our thoughts go out to all involved."

Cornell University issued this statement to WXXI News:

"A student by the name of Charles John Tan, of Pittsford, N.Y., is enrolled as a sophomore in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.  Cornell University is not involved in the Pittsford investigation and consequently we have no comment on that investigation. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
