The longtime Executive Director of the Rochester Riverside Convention Center has died. Joe Floreano had been battling cancer.
Floreano came to Rochester in 1983 when the facility was first being constructed. The Greece man received a national honor earlier this year, a Legacy Award from the International Association of Venue Managers Foundation for his achievements in management excellence.
At the time of the award last May, Floreano said, “Receiving the Legacy Award marks the pinnacle of a long career in an industry I love”
Floreano was reportedly diagnosed with liver cancer last February, and recently had been working from home. He died last night at Strong Hospital.
On Wednesday afternoon local officials will be at re-naming ceremony, and the facility he led for so many years will now be called the " Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center "
Mayor Lovely Warren issued a statement, in which she says that "renaming the convention center is a small gesture, a tribute to someone who did so much to build it into the gem that it is today. He will forever be memorialized as a man who believed in our city and worked daily to make it a place for so many residents and visitors alike to enjoy."
The 2:15 p.m. ceremony will be broadcast live at: www.cityofrochester.gov/mayorwebcast.
