Patrick Phelan took the oath of office as the chief of Greece police Monday.
Retired Police Chief Gerald Phelan swore in his son on the same family bible he took his oath on in 1975. The elder Phelan said the day was more momentous than then when he was made chief.
For 96 consecutive years, someone in the Phelan family worked as a police officer. Both father and son are proud of this legacy.
“I was in the police uniform when I held him; he was only a few minutes old. He loved to put my hat on and walk around when he was 5. He's constantly interacted with the Greece Police Department since he was a few minutes old,” said Gerald Phelan.
After taking the oath, Patrick Phelan said he plans to maintain the status quo in the department where he’s served since 1987.
“It's going to be a pretty seamless transition. I’m not going to make a lot of big changes. We're going to keep doing what we're doing and make it better,” said the new Chief Phelan.
