A local organization is highlighting a report on the impact poverty has on women in the seven-county Rochester region.
The Women's Foundation of Genesee Valley evaluated data from the 2010 Census. It found that more than 58 percent of adults in the region who live in poverty are women.
The foundation's Executive Director, Susan Latoski, says 78 percent of female households with children in the City of Rochester have incomes that are not self-sustaining. Latoski says this is a different measurement than the government's poverty level. “So for instance, for a single parent family with an infant and one school aged child living in Monroe County, the family needs to earn more than $45,000 to be self-sufficient.” The median income for households headed by females in Monroe County is just over $30,000.
The Women's Foundation provides grants to programs that help women and girls pursue an education and become economically self-sufficient.
