Coming up on Connections: Thursday, January 23rd

12 noon: Talk show host Tavis Smiley; Rochester Area Community Foundation CEO Jennifer Leonard

1pm: Dialogue on Disability focuses on "aging out" and transition

At noon, PBS' Tavis Smiley joins us to talk about a number of issues, including his upcoming visit to RIT and poverty in America. Rochester recently landed high on the list of impoverished urban areas, and Smiley will weigh in on how that can change. Jennifer Leonard, CEO of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, joins us to expand on the issue of poverty in Rochester.

At 1pm, we look at a precarious time of life for people with special needs: transition. That marks the transition between childhood and adulthood, and is often referred to as "aging out." That's because many people with special needs become too old for some services. What then? We welcome Martha Mock, an  associate professor of education and pediatrics at the University of Rochester and director of the Institute for Innovative Transition, along with Joe Kelly, assistant superintendent for instructional programs at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES.
