Wegmans is releasing some additional details on the USDA recall announced Tuesday regarding some marinated chicken products.
The Rochester-based chain says it is recalling about 1,125 pounds of those products that were inadvertently produced without the benefit of federal inspection. The problem was discovered during a review of records and the inspector found that Wegmans changed a production schedule, producing the chicken outside the approved hours of operation.
Wegmans issued a statement Wednesday emphasizing that there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of that chicken, and that anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
“The only reason this product is being recalled is because it was produced without the benefit of USDA inspection, not because any issue or defect was found in the product,” says Jo Natale, vice president of media relations. Wegmans is placing automated phone calls to any customer who purchased the affected product.
The following products (and only these products) are subject to the recall:
Wegmans Italian Marinated Chicken Breast Cutlets, approximately 1 lb. pkg. UPC begins with 2-00866 - ONLY product with a use-by date of 1/24/2016.
Wegmans Brown Sugar Barbecue Seasoned Chicken Breast Cutlet, approximately 1 lb. UPC begins with 2-00949 - ONLY product with a use-by date of 1/15/2016.
Wegmans Ready To Cook Garlic & Fennel Seasoned Whole Roasting Chicken, approximately 3 lbs. UPC begins with 2-03354 - ONLY product with a use-by date of 1/13/2016.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. or P-7567” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distribution and retail locations in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Natale says some of the chicken was likely sold in the Rochester area as well.
Consumers who have purchased these products should return them to the store for a full refund.
