Hours after Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle secured the Democratic nomination to run for the 25th Congressional District in the general election, the Republican candidate, neurosurgeon Dr. James Maxwell, has outlined his platform for the fall.
It includes fixing what he calls a broken healthcare system, bringing more economic opportunity to Rochester, and stamping out public corruption.
“It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to know that Congress is broken,” he told reporters Wednesday morning at the City Grill on East Avenue.
He says he knows the “medical game” inside and out, and healthcare costs have skyrocketed, while the level of services, in some instances, has decreased.
“As your Congressman, I will be a tireless advocate for a patient-centered health care system that lowers costs,” he said.
Maxwell says he’d work to expand healthcare to those who don’t have it, and fight for more funding for cancer research in Monroe County.
He says he’s also staunch supporter of the Me Too movement, and says he’ll advocate for women when he is in Congress.
Maxwell calls his opponent, Assembly Majority Leader Morelle, a career politician, and the people of the district have told him it's time for a change.
“As I go door-to-door in Monroe County, I hear a big disgruntlement, big dissatisfaction with the status quo, from everybody, both parties. It really doesn’t matter. And they want change. They want a fresh face,” he said.
Maxwell says he has not reached out to Donald Trump for support in the mid-term elections, and the President will not be coming here.
Dr. Jim Maxwell says he’s performed over 7000 surgeries, and made over 20,000 consultations. He says he’s had the honor of listening to patients and helping them heal with brain and spine surgery:
