Crews have begun demolition work of the Town of Irondequoit's Department of Public Works garage, which was extensively damaged by fire last Christmas Eve.

Town Supervisor David Seeley says a controlled demolition of the structure is the first step in a plan to put up a temporary facility for the town's fleet as a permanent building is constructed near the Route 104/590/East Ridge Road area.

"Seeing that 85 year old building come down, really gives you a window into the future of what we could realize with the Town Hall Campus overall," he said.

He says this will clear out 20 acres of land that could be used for additional parking, athletic fields and other amenities he says should really transform the area.

"We have a beautiful Town Hall, beautiful library, it's really a fantastic campus.  It's really unique, it's park-like.  But then you have this industrial artery running through it.  It's never really made a lot of sense.  But just to remove that opens up good opportunities for the town," he said.

Seeley says the plan is to have the new town garage completed in 2019, at which point the temporary structure will be razed.
