Back on June 29th, Ja-mes Beckford saw smoke coming from a neighbor's house, so ran home to tell his mother.
She called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers that an elderly woman was trapped.
Ja-mes, meanwhile, grabbed a pair of boots and tried to kick down the kitchen door, but he said the flames were too intense and he had to wait for the fire department to arrive.
Fire Chief John Schreiber says Ja-mes' actions led to the successful rescue of 89-year old Talese Clark from her Terrace Park Home.
He says everyone involved came together, and Ja-mes "saw something, and he said something, and that's critical."
"It goes back to him caring about his neighbor, his parents knowing about his neighbor and their habits and routines, and everything came together. They were able to transmit that information to 9-1-1, 9-1-1 was able to transmit that to the fire department and responding units, and we were able to make a rescue and save an 89-year old woman."
The city presented Ja-mes with a Certificate of Recognition for his actions.
He says it's a good feeling to be recognized as a 'hero.'
His mother, Dorothy Fisher, says she's very proud of her son.
