Slaughter Reserves Comment on Redistricting

Proposed congressional redistricting maps by Assembly Democrats and Senate Republicans would take Representative Louise Slaughter out of Buffalo and Niagara Falls, and put her district predominately in Monroe County.

But Slaughter says she's reserving comment on congressional redistricting in New York until the process is finalized.

Meanwhile, government watchdog Common Cause New York has reviewed the plans, and

Executive Director Susan Lerner says the group supports the idea of making the current 28th district a Monroe County district, as proposed by both plans. She says Common Cause has long maintained that having it both a Buffalo and Rochester district, "makes no sense."

But Lerner says overall Common Cause New York concludes that both majorities in the legislature are continuing the incumbent protection program, which has characterized the official redistricting process. She says the maps remain "hyper-political."

A federal magistrate will hear arguments during a redistricting hearing scheduled for late Monday afternoon.

The redistricting process drew the attention of NPR in this story broadcast nationally.

The New York Times summed up where the process stands heading into the first full week of March.
