The just-appointed Interim Rochester School Supt. Dan Lowengard was listed in guarded condition Friday morning at Strong Hospital.
He went to the hospital Thursday evening after collapsing at an event sponsored by the Rochester Teachers Association.
Lowengard was talking at the event held at Temple B’rith Kodesh in Brighton when he fell over.
A spokesperson for the district tells WXXI News that Lowengard fell during a presentation and appeared to have fainted. The official says Lownengard was alert immediately after the fall and initially did not want to be taken to the hospital but was convinced by paramedics that he should go as a precaution. At the hospital, officials say Lowengard remained alert and was speaking to his doctors, family members, and district staff.
The 65 year old Lowengard previously was a superintendent in Utica and Syracuse. He was chosen to step in for Bolgen Vargas who resigned last year. Vargas is staying on as a consultant for several months.
Lowengard has said he is not seeking to have the job on a permanent basis. The district is expected to release an update on Lowengard’s condition on Friday.
