Gas prices keep falling, and a milestone has been achieved on a national basis. The AAA says that the average price of a gallon of gas in the U.S. has hit $1.99, which brought the prices below two dollars per gallon for the first time since 2009.
Regional AAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Carey says in the Rochester area, we’re a little higher than that, but still well below where prices were a year ago.
“Right now in the Rochester metro area, the current price for a gallon of gas, is about $2.19. And that is down from about $2.21 a week ago, and if you consider a year ago, it was $2.94, so that’s definitely a big drop in a year.” Carey says gas prices are expected to continue dropping for the next few weeks.
The AAA also projects that the number of year-end holiday travelers will top 100 million for the first time on record.
“So it should be a huge year for holiday travel , here in New York State, we had a little bit of a taste of winter, and now those things have changed, we’re back to more spring-like temperatures here in New York so that should people who are traveling the roadways as well,” Carey told WXXI News.
More than 90 percent of holiday travelers are expected to be on the road. The AAA says that airfares for the top domestic routes are six percent lower this holiday season.
