The Rochester area saw another month of job gains in the latest numbers out from the New York State Labor Department.

The figures for April show the region gained  2,000 private sector jobs  compared to April of a year ago.

State labor analyst Tammy Marino says hiring in construction was strong.

"Seasonal hiring this year appears to be off to an especially good start, and this was especially true in a number of key sectors. Early construction hiring appears to be a little more robust than previous years and area restaurants and bars also reported some fairly strong hiring in April."

Marino says that private education and health were also bright spots in terms of hiring. She says for the past two decades, these sectors have proven to be a very consistent source of job creation, and employment in each of these sectors currently stands at the highest level on record.

The statewide unemployment rate in April was 6.7 percent. That was down from 6.9 percent in March and 7.8 percent in April of last year.

The Rochester area unemployment rates will be released next week.
