The latest numbers from the New York State Labor Department show a gain in employment in the Rochester area.  In December, officials say this area saw an increase of 3800 private sector jobs compared to a year ago. Local employment currently stands at its highest level for December since 2007.

State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says a couple of sectors of the economy did especially well.

"Seasonal hiring was very strong over the past year, this was especially true in a number of key sectors including construction and the leisure industry ."

Marino says health care and private education have also showed strength over the last year. She says manufacturing losses continue to drag down the overall employment numbers.

Statewide, the unemployment rate dropped to 7.1  percent in December, down just over a point from this time last year. The Rochester unemployment numbers will be released next week.
