Unemployment Rate Drops In October

The unemployment rate in the Rochester area in October dropped to its lowest level since the onset of the recession in late 2008. That according to state labor analyst Tammy Marino who says the jobless rate for the Rochester metro last month was 6.7  percent, down nearly one point from October of last year, when it was 7.6 percent.

Last week the state said the local economy added 2700 private sector jobs in October compared to a year ago, with the strongest gains in construction and private education.

Marino says we've seen generally steady job growth over the last few years.

"Over the past three years the region has gained new jobs in 33 of the past 36 months , this is a fairly impressive record. While our job growth appears to be somewhat modest, it's been very consistent ."

Marino says employment levels tend to peak around this time of the year, with more seasonal jobs being created.
