A recently retired local college president already has a new job. Daan Braveman, who led Nazareth College for 15 years before stepping down in June recently joined the law firm of Harter Secrest & Emery to provide consulting services for their Higher Education practice.
In his new role Braveman will advise college and university leaders, helping them address a number of challenging issues, not just related to the pandemic, but areas including diversity, campus culture and finance. And Braveman says his hope is that more colleges work together to help solve problems and share services.
“Schools can learn from each other and help each other, and there have been both at the local and national level a number of instances where colleges, presidents have gotten together, talked about how to deal with reopening, and helped each other. And I want to build on that, so that even past the pandemic we can look at strategic alliances," Braveman said.
Braveman also wants to help colleges learn how to better use technology. He said the pandemic has hastened the need for increasing technical abilities, with demands for more distance learning, but he expects those needs to stick around long after the pandemic ends.
“I’m not worried about remote learning putting colleges, residential schools out of business. But I do think there’s an opportunity to take what we’ve learned in the last few months and enhance the on-campus experience by incorporating more technology and I think that will happen,” Braveman said.
Prior to joining Nazareth, Braveman spent 28 years at Syracuse University College of Law, including eight years as Dean.
