A longtime grocery store in Farmington is closing. Wade's Market Center, which has been in that Ontario County Community for 47 years, will have to close by the end of October.
Alyssa Cheney, the daughter of the store's owner Jim Cheney, says their landlord decided to sell the property to a developer and the person who is buying the property has terminated the lease.
Jim Cheney bought the business on Route 96 from the Wade family two years ago.
His daughter says it's a sad time not only for the 150 employees at the store facing the prospect of losing their jobs, but for people all over the community.
"We’re kind of in the center of Farmington, we attracted a lot of the local people and we've been heavily involved in the community, whether it's donating to the local food cupboard and things like that, supporting our schools' sports teams."
Cheney says her family continues to operate a smaller satellite store in Phelps and she says they are also looking to see whether they might be able to open another, small grocery store.
