The Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra has named a new music director. James Mick, who is an Ithaca College Assistant Professor of Music Education, will replace David Harman who is retiring after 21 years.
Mick will become the fourth music director of the RPYO which was founded 45 years ago. It is a symphonic orchestra comprised of more than 100 of the most accomplished middle and high school musicians from over 30 schools in the Greater Rochester area.
James Mick is also an active performer, having performed double bass with a wide array of ensembles throughout the country. The Kansas native says his personal participation with a youth orchestra organization has become a cornerstone for his continued involvement in music.
