Area utilities brace for damage caused by high winds

TWC News

There is a High Wind Warning in effect for counties including Monroe, Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming on Wednesday from 9am to 10pm. The National Weather Service says wind gusts could top 60mph.

This comes on the heels of last week’s wind storm, which toppled trees and power lines, cutting electricity to thousands of people.

RG&E and NYSEG, both part of AVANGRID, say they have storm readiness teams in place to deal with interruptions.

“We are always prepared to respond to power interruptions, but in a case like this our line crews, support personnel and call center are on heightened alert,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E.

NYSEG’s and RG&E’s first priorities are to respond to known incidents of downed power lines to make the situations safe. (NYSEG customers are asked to call 1.800.572.1131 to report downed wires. RG&E customers are asked to call 1.800.743.1701)

As always, utility officials caution you to stay  away from downed power lines, noting that even lines that appear dead can be deadly.
