Annual Puerto Rican festival gets ready for its 50th anniversary

The annual Puerto Rican Festival wrapped up Sunday at Frontier Field.

The president of the festival Orlando Ortiz says the festival was a big hit with the people that attended, and that included an audience that was a bit of a different mix this year.

Thousands of  Puerto Ricans have moved to Rochester since Hurricane Maria last year, so organizers hoped to cater to some of their need.

"We've had over 3,400 Puerto Ricans who have moved here since Hurricane Maria, so we knew this year was going to be a little different in terms of folks that are coming to the festival for the first time."  Oritz says the festival organizers, were trying to, “emulate some of that stuff here, and provide that opportunity for them to still enjoy their culture."

The festival originated in 1969 making this its 49th year.

Ortiz says they are already planning for a big 50th year celebration next summer.

"We definitely are trying to develop new partnerships and things like that. We have a committee that’s just gear for the 50th. Won’t give any secrets away but we're very much looking forward to it and excited for it, to celebrate that 50th."

The 3-day festival is the longest running ethnic festival in Monroe County.
