The University of Rochester Medical Center and Rochester Regional Health are among the institutions partnering with the drug company Pfizer and the immunotherapy company BioNTech to test a group of COVID-19 vaccine candidates.


Jared Valentine used to own a restaurant, and he has marketing experience, but in recent years, he’s been working gigs whenever he can get them. 

After he lost his seasonal job in Zagster’s operations department due to the bike-share company leaving Rochester, he found himself looking for work immediately. 

He recently answered an ad for a per diem position called "COVID relief" with Rochester Regional Health. He said he wanted to pitch in on the front lines of the pandemic. 

His interview started with a phone call.


Several local researchers and public policy experts got together in a televised virtual forum seen and heard on WXXI TV, radio and online on Thursday night to talk about COVID-19.  They had some answers but also a lot of questions.

Two local major hospital systems are making changes to help cope with the impact of the coronavirus.  

Rochester Regional Health says it will join leading health systems around the world to proactively reschedule elective surgeries as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve.

Officials said that those elective surgeries at all RRH facilities will be rescheduled beginning Monday, March 16 and continuing through March 29. RRH says that the time frame may change as it continues to monitor developments.

Rochester Regional Health is expanding access to its new telemedicine service so patients with symptoms of COVID-19 can talk with a doctor from wherever they are.

The service is called Care Now. Dr. Bridgette Wiefling, Rochester Regional’s vice president for primary care, said patients can call a triage nurse at the primary care office, and the nurse will determine whether the patient can be cared for over the phone or if they need to come in.

A simple phone call can reduce suicide risk

The latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show suicide rates continuing to climb nationwide. In New York, the CDC found that the rate has risen almost 30 percent since 1999.

People who have gone to the emergency room once for an attempted suicide are at high risk for attempting it again after their release.

Now, a study has shown a straightforward way of reducing that risk: calling those patients.

RIT Opens Health Science Center

RIT opened its new Clinical Health Sciences Center Friday.

The Center is a 45-thousand square foot addition to the north end of Louise Slaughter Hall. It will be home to the Wegmans School of Health and Nutrition and student programs in behavioral health, ultrasound and physician's assistant.

A doctor's office and clinic will open October 19 as part of RIT’s partnership with Rochester Regional Health. Primary and walk-in care will be available to RIT employees and the community. A laboratory blood-draw station will also open.
