The AARP Foundation and SAGE, an organization that advocates for older LGBTQ people, announced that they’re working together on an initiative to address needs of older LGBTQ people.

While the pandemic has impacted all aspects of life, for older LBGTQ people of color, it has exposed the effects of long-term discrimination

“COVID-19 has made those challenges worse, but the reality is these severe difficulties and disparities existed long before COVID-19,” Michael Adams with SAGE said.

Lifespan, the Monroe County based organization that provides services to older adults and caregivers, will help coordinate an expanded statewide effort to combat elder abuse.

Governor Andrew Cuomo this week announced $8.4 million in state and federal funding to help provide those services, and the NYS Office for the Aging is partnering with Lifespan  and Weill Cornell Medicine’s NYC Elder Abuse Center to help distribute and manage the funding through September of 2020.

Every day in homes across America, senior citizens experience accidental falls or injuries that require care. Sometimes, that care is handled through a brief stay at the hospital and then a return home; yet, many times, more care is needed, and families begin the process of navigating the elder care system – home health aides, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and hospice care.
