The Catholic Diocese of Rochester says Pope Francis has appointed Rochester's ninth Bishop.
Bishop Salvatore R. Matano has been serving as bishop of Burlington, Vermont. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was ordained to the priesthood in 1971.
Bishop Matano received a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from our Lady of Providence Seminary College in Warwick, Rhode Island. He attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he received a doctorate in Canon Law in 1983.
Bishop Matano will be introduced to the media at a news conference this morning at 10:30.
The news conference will be streamed live at www.catholiccurrier.com.
Matano replaces Bishop Matthew Clark, whose 33 year run as bishop in Rochester ended in September of 2012 when he retired. He has been replaced on an interim basis by the Syracuse Bishop, Robert Cunningham, who for the last year was appointed to serve as "apostolic admiminstrator" of the Rochester diocese.
