The U.S. Attorney for Western New York, William Hochul, has announced he will leave that position and retire from public service as of October 28th.

Hochul was nominated by President Obama to be the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York in 2009. Altogether, he has served nearly 30 years in the Department of Justice starting out as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C. in 1987.

For the last several years he has supervised the prosecution of all federal criminal cases in a 17-county region dealing with both violent criminals and white collar crime.

In recent years he has also dealt with terrorism cases including the recent case of a Rochester man who authorities said planned a violent attack on New Year's Eve, and the prosecution of the first known ISIL recruiter.

Hochul is married to former Congresswoman and current New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul.
