Sheriff's Deputies Could Soon Be Armed with Body Cameras

npr.org

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department's traffic unit is looking to take a test drive with body cameras.

County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn says they're awaiting approval from the Monroe County Legislature to accept a 30 thousand dollar state grant to buy the devices.

10 to 15 units will be used by the traffic unit, according to O'Flynn, and from there, they'll determine if the cameras are effective in supporting investigations, and then look to see if expanding the use of body cameras is logical and cost effective.

O'Flynn points out that often times, video submitted to the media has been edited, and doesn't tell the whole story.

He says a body camera, worn by deputies would help ensure that whatever video is being taken at the crime scene is accurate.

He says the Department had been using dashboard cameras for several years, but began looking into a protocol for body cameras about three years ago, as the cameras became more popular and the technology more flexible.

O'Flynn says if they get the cameras, they'll have to determine the protocols for when the devices are turned on and when they're capturing data.
