Congresswoman Louise Slaughter spoke in front of a 102-year old one-lane bridge in Bushnell's Basin to make her point -- the US is neglecting its roads, bridges, railroads and airports.
Slaughter says that bridge is in desperate need of repairs and maintenance, and it's been proven that one way to revive an economy is through infrastructure projects.
She's calling for passage of a bill that would ban corporate inversion, where companies move abroad to avoid paying taxes.
Slaughter says that would free up some 19.5-billion dollars for the Highway Maintenance Trust to help fund much needed repairs to our infrastructure.
The bridge in Bushnell's Basin is also a safety concern, according to Bushnell's Basin Fire Chief Greg Gulick.
He says last year the bridge was downgraded to an 8 ton limit, so all fire trucks must take a 6 to 7 minute detour from the station -- which is right across the street -- to cross the canal.
He says those minutes could have a significant impact on saving lives and property.
