Train Station Funding Announced

$15 million in federal funding is heading to the area to aid in building a new Intermodal Train Station here in downtown Rochester. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter made the announcement Tuesday.

Martha Monahan says she used to often travel by train when she lived in Europe several years ago. She says she's pleased about the additional funding for the new rail and bus center here in downtown Rochester, "I think the more we can get people out of their privately owned vehicles and the more we can depend on mass transportation is better for the ecology and for the economy and any lowering of the carbon footprint, quote unquote is a good thing."

The $15 million in federal money will help fund design work and build the multi-modal train center.

The new hub would replace the current Amtrak station on Central Avenue housing Trailways and Greyhound buses, taxi cabs and bike racks. The city hopes to begin construction on the nearly $38 million project by the end of 2014.

Congresswoman Slaughter is running for re-election this fall against Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks.
