Garlock Fined $100,000 By The DEC

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has fined Garlock Sealing Technologies $100,000 for failure to comply with conditions of a Brownfield cleanup agreement involving its facilities in Palmyra.

DEC says it issued the fine because Garlock failed to comply with important requirements that are designed to protect public health and the environment.

The Brownfield Cleanup Program offers an opportunity for contaminated sites to be redeveloped. Garlock was initially accepted into that program in 2005.  But the DEC says that Garlock did not submit timely reports on the cleanup and failed to maintain a soil vapor mitigation system.

State officials say that Garlock has now addressed the soil vapor issue and filed the reports.

Garlock makes gaskets, seals, and other products. It has been in Palmyra for about 100 years.
