Datto, the data backup and networking company started by an RIT grad, has named its new CEO.

Tim Weller succeeds company founder Austin McChord who announced last October he would be stepping down as CEO. McChord remains a board member of Datto.

When McChord stepped back from the top spot, Weller helped lead the company on an interim basis. He has been with Datto since June of 2017, and most recently was President and Chief Operating Officer.

Weller’s resume includes stints as CFO of two Boston-based public companies including Akamai Technologies, and EnerNOC, a clean energy technology company.

“Tim and I worked every day, side by side, for the last 18 months as we grew Datto. I’m happy to see Tim lead the company moving forward,” McChord said in a statement released by the company. “Tim understands Datto’s values and unique culture and lives it everyday. I am confident that under Tim’s leadership Datto will continue to grow and prosper.”

Weller will assume the CEO position immediately, which Datto said provides a seamless transition from his interim role of leading Datto’s executive team over the last two months.

Datto last year moved 225 jobs from its previous location on Franklin Street in Rochester, to several floors in The Metropolitan, which is the former Chase Tower.

The company’s headquarters is in Connecticut.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
