Sears Closing At Medley Centre And A Kmart In Greece Also Closing

The last remaining retailer at Medley Centre is closing. Sears Holdings says it will close 68 Kmart and 10 Sears stores this summer, including the Sears at the former Irondequoit Mall.

In February, the company said it would accelerate the closing of unprofitable stores.

"The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take aggressive actions to strengthen our company, fund our transformation and restore Sears Holdings to profitability," said Edward Lampert, the Chairman and CEO of Sears Holdings. "We're focusing on our best members, our best categories and our best stores as we work to accelerate our transformation."

The company also announced that a Kmart on West Ridge Road in Greece will close.

The stores are expected to close in late July and workers impacted by the closures will get severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other Sears and Kmart stores.

Medley Centre has steadily lost its remaining retailers in recent years, and earlier this year, a local businessman, Angelo Ingrassia, bought the mall and some adjoining parcels. Developer David Flaum bought the former Macy's building and is working on redevelopment plans.
