Wegmans Celebrates 100 Years

@Wegmans

Wegmans was giving out cake on Saturday, but it wasn't just one of those sampler type stations they often set up in the stores to get you to try a new product.

This time, it was a big birthday party celebrated in the 88 stores scattered throughout the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.

The occasion is to mark the 100th anniversary of the Rochester-based company that started in 1916 when brothers John and Walter Wegman went into the food business together.

As part of the festivities on Saturday, a 100th anniversary celebration cake, uniquely created by each store, was sliced up for customers and employees to enjoy. The stores also unveiled a new portrait of Robert Wegman, who in 1937 began to work for his father Walter and Uncle Jack and then led the company from 1950 until his death in 2006.

Current CEO Danny Wegman, in a letter in the 100th anniversary of the supermarket chain's Menu magazine wrote: "As we reflect on how we got here, we remember a simple rule that my dad taught us: 'Never think of yourself; always help others.'

Wegmans is one of the largest family-owned companies in the U.S., with nearly 46,000 employees. The company says it will recognize the 100th anniversary in various ways throughout the year.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
