Local Couple Donates $6.5 Million To Le Moyne College

A Pittsford couple has donated $6.5 million to Le Moyne College in Central New York, the third largest gift in that school's history.

The donation comes from former Fibertech Networks CEO John Purcell and his wife Kathy. They are alum's of  Le Moyne and they met while they were students at the college.

In recognition of the gift, Le Moyne has renamed its School of Graduate and Professional Studies as the Kathy & John Purcell School of Professional Studies. Officials say that school incorporates areas such as physician assistant studies, education, nursing and occupational therapy.

The Purcells issued a statement saying that they are "so blessed to be able to give back to our alma mater in such a meaningful and significant way..."

College President Linda LeMura said the resources available to a named school help attract the best faculty and provide many of the things necessary to sustain and enhance strengths and seize opportunities to meeting changing market needs.

Earlier this year it was announced that Fibertech Networks, a Brighton-based company which provides fiber optic network services throughout parts of the Eastern and Central U.S., is merging with Massachusetts based Lightower Fiber Networks in a deal  valued at $1.9 billion.

Purcell said at the time that  after the deal is completed, current employees will stay on board with the possibility of growing that workforce.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
