George Eastman 'House' Changes Name To 'Museum'

The George Eastman 'House' has a new name. It is now the George Eastman 'Museum.'

“The three-part mission of the George Eastman Museum remains leadership in the fields of photography and cinema; preservation and development of our collections, including the historic mansion and gardens; and service to our communities, in Rochester and beyond,” said museum director Bruce Barnes, “Our new name better conveys our institution’s core identity as a dynamic museum with world-class collections in the fields of photography and cinema.”

The museum was founded in 1947 and is the world's oldest photography museum.  Its holdings include more than 450,000 photographs and has one of the oldest film archives.

The building on East Avenue is a National Historic Landmark, and Barnes says they are committed to its preservation and the museum is currently making a substantial investment in restoration projects for its original structures.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
