The Ontario County Public Health Department is reporting that county’s first deaths from COVID-19.

The agency says that both individuals were being cared for at the Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

One of the individuals had tested positive for COVID-19 and was being monitored. He died suddenly in the hospital. Officials say the other individual was very ill and comfort care was being provided at the Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has begun a new effort to connect people in mental health crisis with a team of professionals at Rochester Regional Health.

Deputies on a crisis intervention team will use iPads to make video calls to the Rochester Regional clinicians as part of a pilot program overseen by the state Office of Mental Health.

“Law enforcement’s changing,” said Ontario County Sheriff Kevin Henderson. “It’s not just about getting criminals in jail.”

"There’s panic," Marty Teller said, sitting in a conference room in the executive offices of the Finger Lakes Area Counseling and Recovery Agency. "What you’re really seeing is, the epidemic is rising."

For five rural counties around the Finger Lakes, FLACRA is the only provider of certain state-sanctioned treatments for opioid use disorder. On a per capita basis, those counties have some of the highest death rates due to opioid overdose in New York state.

It’s like “delivering nutrition through the back door,” Maggie McHugh said.

McHugh is the senior nutritionist for Eat Smart New York’s Finger Lakes region. Her organization is partnering with Ontario County to encourage food bank donors to make healthier contributions.

“We provide resources and tools for community members to learn more what healthy food items that they can donate to their local food pantries are,” said McHugh.

Low-sodium canned vegetables or canned fruit packed in water instead of heavy syrup are examples of easy healthy donations, McHugh said.
