New York continues to target railroad tracks and oil tank cars, trying to make it safer to transport crude oil through the state.
To handle more inspections, Governor Cuomo added at least 19 employees at the DEC, DOT and at the state office tasked with planning response and containment for oil spill incidents.
Last week, inspectors focused on a 111-mile stretch of the CSX mainline tracks, from North Chili through Rochester and Macedon to Warners, near Syracuse.
According to a statement from the Governor, the inspectors found three critical defects, a defective switch guard, a missing spike, and loose bolts. Repairs were immediate, according to the Governor.
Cuomo says New York is trying to make rail service safer after seeing crude oil disasters in other states.
